CV White Lies

May 6, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Have you ever been tempted to puff out your CV?

Do you feel you need to sell your skills and maybe loose the run of yourself on describing your skills and experience?

From an employers perspective it is a definate no no to pad out your CV and it will get you in trouble in the long run. An experienced employer will recognise what doesn’t quite sound right.

We have recently come across two separate instances here at the Jobs Online Group where staff or potential employees embellished CV experience and skills were uncovered.

One led to an instant dismissal and the other a job offer withdrawn. So be careful on what you admit to in your CV.

Honesty is the best policy

If you worked in a previous job for 6 months and put down 9 months to make it sound better, it will go against you when found out.

If you had a clash of personality in your previous employment and you parted badly, then honesty is the best policy and your employer will take that into consideration when reference checking.

If you started a business but it failed, put it down in your CV, instead of lying as to your whereabouts for the past 3 years.

Remember employers are hiring people that want to fit into the company, honesty and integrity come first, skills and experience second.

Think before your next white lie.
